A Group of eye disease affecting central vision is known as “Macular Degeneration”. National Eye Institute has reported that macular degeneration is the leading cause of the vision loss among people aging 60 and older. This disease is also reported to cause vision loss more in Caucasians as compared to African-Americans. This disease is also more common in women as compared to men.

Macular degeneration is also known as Age-Related Macular Degeneration because the risk for the development of this disease increases with the increase in age. Studies have also proven that this disease may occur in middle age but it more commonly appear with older women.

Some kinds of macular degeneration do also appear among children as well. One of such form is Juvenile Macular Degeneration. Reports have shown that this disease has affected around ten thousand children around Americas. This form of Macular Degeneration usually appears between ages six to twenty. It is hereditary in nature.

In year, 1997 studies were conducted and as a result, the gene was identified for causing this disease. Apart from genetic factor, following are the risk factors for this disease:

  • Obesity
  • Belonging from Caucasian Race
  • Sex: female
  • Family history
  • Smoking
  • High levels of cholesterol in blood
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • High blood pressure

This disease is said to hit the macula, central part of the retina. Retina is involved in clarity and sharpening of your vision. The affect of this disease is deterioration of macula, blurred and distorted vision. This would lead to difficulty while reading, increased requirement of light to view and problem recognizing colors. People in case attacked by this disorder generally go completely blind over sometime.

There are two common kinds of macular degeneration i.e. dry macular degeneration and Wet macular degeneration. According to estimates as made by National Eye Institute eighty five percent of people suffering from Macular degeneration have dry type while rest have wet type of macular degeneration.

Dry macular degeneration generally occurs in one eye and does not affect the other eye but still the causes of this disease are unknown and there is no known cure for it as well. The warning signs of dry Macular degeneration are distorted and blurred vision. The patient showing up with this disease is observed to improve their eyesight with increased lights and improving the contrast.

Wet macular degeneration on other hand is more severe and can cause complete loss of eyesight. This is caused due to abnormal supply of blood to the retina of eye. This abnormal supply may be result of leaking of blood out of damaged vessel and thus lift up in eye develops resulting damage to eye and vision distorting.

some eye problems can be resolved with laser eye surgery treatments but it is first best to seek the advice of a opthalmologist before considering any eye treatments
